Description

“Ireland is famous worldwide as a land of music and song. We have a thriving folk tradition that has evolved since aincent times, through the penal laws, the famine and the arival of the age of mass media and modern music. Each musician has played a part but it is beyond doubt that without one group of Irish society we would not have inherited such a legacy. That group is the Traveller community. As Travellers have not been included in the written history of Ireland, little is known of their origin, likewise in the history of music, little havs been documented about the Traveller musicians of early times.”

From an introduction to Traveller music, part of a permanent exhibition on display in Pavee Point Traveller and Roma centre Dublin.
